She hated him! She hated the way he smirked at her from inside the arena like his stupidly chiseled face was made of fine china.

When it had come to his turn, Laura had been dastardly hoping on Meltdown throwing a fit and trampling the arrogant bastard. Fists clenched at her sides and her face turned red as he blew her a kiss from the saddle, where he was able to get his horse to behave absolutely perfectly without a care in the world. Laura had done well herself, but she was still nervous atop Dragon.
She envied his confidence.

Although what she didn't envy was his dangerously inflated ego and flaming eccentricity, Laura had had to talk him out of bringing his dog up into the saddle to go into the ring with him.

Jake and Laura were both temp riders and had been in constant competition for who would be able to be hired full time as Top Creek's permanent Western prodigy alongside Kenny. Perhaps the fact that she hated his guts was influenced heavily by their rivalry.

Unlike him however, she needed this job. Her mom was struggling back home with her younger siblings and Robin paid well.
Jake was just a nobody from Tennessee that happened to move to Ireland for a short time because he had relatives over there and needed the job experience.

She hoped he got what his privileged butt deserved, which would be ending up on said butt in front of a crowd of more than a hundred. But much to her chagrin, he finished perfectly and dismounted with a sigh and a smile in her direction.
"How'd I do?" He asked.
"Terrible." She replied, without missing a beat.
Jake frowned. "Really? That bad?"
"Yup."
"Liar." He grinned again. "At least I weren't quivering in the saddle like you were on that Mard."
"At least I'm not a rich idiot from the boonies who can't form a sentence with moderately decent grammar. You do realize that nobody likes you, eh Pardner?" She mocked, scoffing at the end with an indignant expression; her little rant somewhat of a retaliation for the unsolicited advice he'd given her earlier on her home life.

He went silent.

She almost slapped him for the lack of a response, but her phone rang in her pocket and she was forced to answer when she realized it was Robin. "Hello? Robin?"
She answered tentatively, wondering how her temporary boss seemed to call precisely after the class. That woman seemed to have every single show schedule down to a T.

After a few moments of listening to an indistinct conversation, Jake wandered off from behind her and disappeared to go put Meltdown away.

"You want to hire me permanently? For serious?" Laura was practically jumping up and down with glee. This meant that she would be able to maybe ride Dragon full time. It also meant that she'd won! Haha, that jerk would be so jealous. "Thank you so much!" She huffed, turning around to smirk at Jake, but he wasn't there anymore.

"You can thank Jake for putting up that Youtube video for me to see of you and Dragon in the reining class. He was the one who recommended you be hired full time as the new permanent." She could hear the smile in Robin's voice.

The woman had no clue about their little competition since Laura and Jake had always acted thick as thieves in front of her. And then the second she left, they were at eachother's throats again.

Laura's face fell. "J-Jake? Jake recommended me?"
The guilt hit her like a brick wall.

Oops. She'd pretty much just summed up her hatred for him. Well, how was she supposed to know? He'd taunted her first! Wait? Had he? Oh no! She felt awful now.

Better go apologize.

Jake's name is based off my two references - his first name is from Phantom Stallion because I used to have a crush on Jake from the books. And his last name is because of Bonanza, because Bonanza has to be the best old west show ever created.

Also, I swear Laura isn't a dick, just highly sensitive xDD Lisa is the troubled one in my little stable plot

So prettyyyy! Jake and meltdown both look awesome! Love the story as well; you can really feel how much she dislikes him, especially at the beginning! And I love the twist at the end >D talk about feelin like a git lol
